Lets talk about Human Senses !!

There are 5 senses known to human as described by Aristotle and I assume we remember what those senses are.But just in case you had forgotten about them, here's a quick reminder for you.

Sound

Sight

Smell

Taste

Touch

But are these the only senses known to humans? Did you that there are actually more than 5 senses in a human body?

Senses are any system that consists of a group of sensory cell types that respond to a specific physical condition and corresponds to a particular part of the the brain where the signals are received and interpreted.

Here are some senses that we don't hear often : -

Proprioception: This sense gives you the ability to tell where your body parts are.  This sense is one of the things police officers test when they pull over someone who they think is driving drunk and ask them to touch certain parts of their body.

Thermoception: The ability to sense heat and cold. Thermoceptors that exists in the brain, are used for monitoring internal body temperature.

Nociception:  The ability to sense pain. When other senses are overloaded, commonly “touch system",we would sense pain, but scientist found that it has its own unique sensory system.  There are three distinct types of pain receptors are found in the skin, bones and body organs.

Thirst:  This system allows your body to monitor its hydration level so your body knows when  you should drink.

Hunger:  This system allows your body to detect when you hungry. (bet you never knew that this was a sensory system)

So we hope we at MYC! gave you some extra information about the senses in our sensory system.

Someone once told me, of all human senses, we lack COMMON SENSE most. Perhaps its true..Hehe.. =D . Have a wonderful time all !!! Cheers!!

RESTORAN JETI, KUALA SELANGOR

Driving 1.5 hour to the borders of Selangor for seafood? That’s what being a Hungry Traveler is all about! With so many friends of mine raving about the seafood at Kuala Selangor, I thought it’s time the expert step in to judge with my very mouth what the fuss is all about. Of course after dinner, we went for some firefly viewing by the river (darn you mosquitos!)…

Steamed Fish
I was never good with fishes (one you’ve tasted one, you’ve tasted them all). Again, your magnanimous Hungry One is sadly mistaken. I ordered a Sour Spicy fish that is succulent and juicy, and pull out a piece and you’ll have the fragrant sauce wafting towards you nasal senses.

Mantis Prawn 1
Ok, for a person who places Mantis Prawns in the category of Road Hogs and men who leave the toilet seat up (ie. I hate them), I was weak in determination when my troupe persuaded me to try two types of Mantis Prawn that they swore will convert me. This one, not bad, really. Not much of a taste, but the slight spiciness is enough. The prawn was first fried to crisp then stir-fried in sauce, giving it a crunchy yet soft taste. I may like this.

Mantis Prawn 2
Time for the second experiment! It comes in a suspicious yellow mustard color, which I was told is basically milk and butter. Hmm, not a good concoction with prawns, but oh well! At first bite, my mouth exploded with flavor with this new-found butter milk mixture. It’s delicious, appetizing and definitely has you craving for more. I was initially worried about the abundance of sauce deeming the prawns soggy, but no worries! They’re pretty crispy and still awesome!

Oyster
When they told me it is oyster, I argued and said it is pancake! It’s basically oyster mixed in flour batter and fried to a circular round, and it’s perfectly balanced. The original taste of oyster is brought out even through the batter without being too over-powering.

Signature Tofu
Mmm…tofu lovers, this is for you. Their chef’s home made tofu is tasty and full of flavor, and absolutely mouth-melting. Breaded and fried, and when hot, dip it into tartar sauce and it’s the perfect side dish by itself. Some were a little over-fried, but it’s still fine (adds a little home feel to it…sorry mom).

Conclusion
It took 1.5 hours to get there in the dark unlit roads, but seafood lovers will love the trip, and for me, it’s totally worth it! I didn’t get to eat any crab this time (they ran out) but there will always be another time! Till then, Restoran Jeti, wait for me, my love!

Let’s Get Serious about… Eating!

Let’s be honest here, the truth is always hard to digest, but someone’s got to take the bullets and unveil the hard core truth about our food. As the “mamak” stalls are flourishing like mushrooms after rain, it’s time we take matters into our own hands before our future generation suffer from…*gasp* roti canai  overload…

Seriously: What are we eating?

1.       Burgers made out of a family of cows – A variety of different cows from many different areas can be used in order to produce one ordinary burger patty. This increases the risk of contamination as even just one unhealthy cow within the group may end up causing a large amount of people who eat it to become really ill.

2.      Painted food – The reason that artificial food colourings are used in our food is to make it more appealing to the eye. Apart from these food being those that have questionable nutritional values, these artificial colourings have been suspected to be one of the causes of cancer as well.
3.       Nail dissolving acid – Not to scare you, but the next time you gulp down on your second large cup of gassy drink, just try to remember that the phosphoric acid in it is sOoo acidic that it can dissolve a nail within 4 days.

4.      An average person’s yearly outdoor food intake will contain 12 pubic hairs – Now, I believe that in itself is self explanatory. You know you’ve been to one of those food joints! Let’s try to keep this number low.

Seriously: What should we be eating?

The fact is that eating healthy is not about trying to stay scarily thin, obeying strict unrealistic (should I say, unMalaysian?) food habits or cutting yourself off the food you love but rather eating everything in moderation, keeping healthy and feeling good and more energize. The key to eating healthy is to “eat smart”. Here are some tips:

  1. Think variety – Your body needs more than 30 types of nutrients each day. No single food can supply them all. Therefore, it’s important to eat a variety of different food to ensure that your body can have all that it needs. And no, variety does not mean, Roti Canai, Roti Telur and Roti Mumtaj Naan in one seating.

  2. Eat in smaller portions – One of the reason for overeating is the fact that the size of food servings have balooned in the current times. Try using smaller plates the next time you dine as it is actually a basic psychological need to want more food when you serve on a bigger plate as the plate will seem emptier.

  3. Make sure you eat a rainbow of food – Apart from making your food appear more appertizing and delicious, it is said that each food colour provide different sort of benefits to your body.

  4. Do not ban certain food - Of course, not all food has to be perfect la... Therefore, just because you have a sweet tooth or salty tooth, do not label certain food item as “off limits” because you will only crave for them more. Instead, eat a small portion of them just to satisfy your craving.

  5. Eat slower – Chew your food and eat slowly as it takes a few minutes for your brain to register that you are full. Plus, often times we tend to rush through our meals forgetting to savour and appreciate the deliciousness of it thus, craving for more.

Michael Bublé's Romantic Italian Holiday!

Honeymoon bliss: Michael Bublé and his wife Luisana Lopilato during a romantic sunset gondola ride in Venice

The "Crazy Love" singer, who has dual Italian and Canadian citizenship, was spotted getting cozy with his new bride, Luisana Loreley Lopilato de la Torre, in Venice, Italy, on what appeared to be a very romantic honeymoon.

Bublé, 35, and Lopilato de la Torre, 23, toured the fabled Italian city looking every bit the happy couple basking in their wedded bliss. Their agenda included something no trip to Venice is complete without: an intimate gondola ride through the canals.
The couple, who met at a record industry party in Buenos Aires in November 2008 and became engaged the following year, were in "The City of Bridges" after tying the knot in a small, private, civil ceremony in Buenos Aires last month. That was followed by a 300-person wedding bash at a private mansion outside the Argentine capital days later.
Venice, it seems, is just a brief stop on their marriage tour: The couple also plan to throw a wedding reception in Vancouver for Bublé's family and friends.

But they'll have to do it soon, because the Grammy-winner shows no signs of slowing down his careet. His Crazy Love tours kicks off June 1st in Austin, Texas.

Can you help us? The couple stop and talk to a member of staff at the train station in Venice as they head for their train to Milan

PS: AHH HOW SWEET :)  Next stop? MILAN babeh! Where they shop and shop!

Let’s Get Serious About… Attracting the Opposite Sex

Let’s face it, not everyone has Justin Timberlake-type game. Some of us even find it hard talking to friends of the opposite sex let alone trying to flirt with that cute guy/girl at the bar. Don’t worry; let the resident Casanovas at MYC! be your wingmen (or women) and spruce up your game a little..

For The Ladies!
  • Be positive
A positive demeanour goes beyond just walking and talking positively. Just enjoy being you. Men are more attracted to women who actually enjoy their life, and not count the calories in your salad. However, if you do get that first date, don’t drone on and on about how you enjoy life (blah, blah, blah...).
  • Get noticed.
How is a guy going to fall for you if he doesn’t even notice you! What you wear and the way you look is also important. Trust, me a well dressed lady never goes un-noticed.
  • Be approachable.
Guys are weary around women who look defensive and intimidating (Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned after all). Flash a smile, loosen up and bait him to come talk to you and soon you have him eating out of your hand!
  • Be an apple-polisher Throw him a compliment.
Everyone likes compliments and guys are no different (we like to hear how awesome we are)… just make sure you’re genuine about it. Contrary to popular belief, men can sense insincerity.
  • Establish a common interest.
He’s approached you and small talk had been exchanged. Now establish a common ground - music, dance or even your ever-growing Robert Pattinson poster collection. Establishing a common interest allows him to feel comfortable around you, immediately earning you brownie points.

For The Dudes!
  • Dress to impress.
No girl is going to give a second look at your tattered t-shirts and never-been-washed jeans (no matter how much you argue it’s vintage). We’re asking you to dress well, but keep the penguin suits in the fridge where it belongs…and oh, run a comb through your hair.
  • Make the first move.
There is a fair amount of chivalry in approaching the lady first. Forget the pick-up lines, those are cheesy. Just say hi and be confident about it. Ladies like a confident gentleman.
  • Be charming.
Having a sense of humour is usually the best way to attract a lady. Charm her, compliment her and make her laugh. You’ll find that it really does go a long way. But…..
  • Don’t be desperate.
Don’t try too hard. That’ll just tick her off. Make a couple of jokes and if you don’t get a response, just play it cool. It’s time for you to do some damage management and move on…
  • Don’t buy her affection.
Giving a gift to that girl you like in class the first time is sweet. The hundredth gift, now that’s just annoying. Instead of just buying her stuff, make her something, learn the guitar and sing her a song or prepare lunch for her. Something money can’t buy is always more impressive!

Guys, you need all the help you can get…
Women are hard to read, but here are some stuff they don’t tell you…
ü  They like the chase…you chasing them
ü  Things that are “OK” are probably just fine (not awesome)
ü  We WANT you to have your “guy time”
ü  You can’t brag to your friends about them, but they can tell theirs about you
ü  Though they say it’s  for “your own good”, they want you to dress well to make them look good

SWITCHFOOT Answers our Questions!

Since the band's dropping by this Sunday, we begged Warner Music Malaysia (thanks Nina, we wuv u) to let us drill some questions into Switchfoot member Jerome via email, and lo and behold, he answered every question! WOohoo! Thanks Jerome! Here's the unedited, uncensored and unreserved emailer with SWITCHFOOT! Woots!

1) Hey boys, welcome back to Malaysia again. This is definitely not the first time you’ve been to Malaysia. What surprises can we expect?
Well, first of all, we haven't played any songs from our current album "hello hurricane" for you guys yet, so we're really excited to play some of those songs. Hopefully, what you can
expect from us is a good ole' fashion rock show.

2)What’s different about your upcoming new album Vice Verses and how is the general direction of the album?
We definitely were more direct as to which songs we wanted on the album. That gave us time to really explore how to creatively create the song in a unique way. Some songs were built on just drum and bass, while others were built on us playing the song live together and building from that. It's definitely a direction in which we haven't gone before but we're glad we did.

3) Any expectations for any track in Vice Verses to top “Dare You To Move?” What do you think was the success factor in that particular track?
"Dare you to move" is a special song that a lot of people really connected to when they heard it. I believe there are songs on the new album in which I feel a lot of people will be able to connect with.

4) We read somewhere that you guys actually built your own studio in hometown San Diego. We always wanted to know why do you feel the need to build one of your own, and what are the awesome stuff we can find in your own studio that we won’t be able to see in other studios?
The great thing about having your own studio is that you're not pressed for time to get things done. We can go in there and record something and take our time doing it. Plus, it also serves as a place we can rehearse and to store all our gear at.

5) Everyone make mistakes along the way. What mistakes have you guys made in the previous albums and how has it contributed to a learning curve/improvement to Vice Verses?
I'd like to think that the mistakes we made were "good" mistakes, such as accidentally creating a great guitar tone or finding a drum fill that fits a certain part of the song, or simply playing a part that you would never really think about playing and pleasantly find out it was instrumental in making the song what it is.

6) You guys had always disagreed with the moniker “Christian Rock Band”, citing that “it’s a faith, not a genre” ever since you guys debuted. How do you generally react nowadays since it’s been many years down the line with that label?
It really has not changed much. We stand firm in the fact that it's a faith, not a genre.

7)Jon released several solo projects. Were there any elements or songs that you brought over from your solo projects into your studio album?
Yes, the elements of a songs simplicity yet how it conveys so much depth and emotion. The fact that you don't need a lot of instrumentation to make a song breathe. It can be just as powerful with just a guitar and vocal.

8) Your music has evolved significantly since 1997. You once quoted that Dave Grohl was your influence for The Beautiful Letdown. It’s been 8 albums down the road. Who do you think is your major influence for Vice Verses?
I think we've grown exponentially since then. We're 8 albums in, and I think the fact that we have been through life a bit more and have grown up a bit more, you can say is a big influence in the creating of "Vice Verses"

9) So what’s in store for the near future for Switchfoot?
Well we're excited for the new album "Vice Verses". We just finished recording it. Hopefully it'll be out by July, Aug sometime. And then we'll be touring for the next year or so.

10) What makes good music to you guys?
It starts with a good melody. Then, the song needs to make you feel something. It needs to impact you somehow. This is where the instrumentation comes into play. If the song has a great melody, then all the instrumentation should just fall into place fairly easily.

11) Being veterans in the music industry, who do you think shows the most potential to go far down the road?
I think any band can go far down the road if they are persistent enough and dedicated enough. I've seen a lot of good bands not do well because they aren't as dedicated to touring and performing the songs live to as many people as possible.

12) Any tips for the newbies in the industry?
Don't get too caught up in the next big show. Enjoy the "now". Your last show might just be the best show of your life whether it's in front of 5 people or 1000.
