Cool Techs

Happy Wednesday to all tech dudes and dudettes!

We came across a few cool techs that we ought to share with you! Check it out! :)

The Curly Fries Cutter!
No more time-consuming and hazardous slicing with a knife — simply place your potato or other vegetable inside the Curly Fry Cutter and turn the crank. The threaded rod makes slicing easier, and the Curly Fry Cutter’s closed design keeps fingers safe while minimizing countertop mess. You can make both slices and continuous spirals with the Curly Fry Cutter, perfect for both casual and fancy dining.
- And you thought potatoes grow curly?

The Pot for the Lazy Cook!
This is the electric cooker that automatically stirs ingredients, leaving you free to prepare other parts of the meal. A spatula integrated into the bottom of the pot rotates autonomously as food cooks, mixing ingredients and lifting bits of food that would otherwise stick and burn. The spatula can be set to stir continuously–ideal for stir frying–or intermittently to ensure a simmering soup’s ingredients are well incorporated. The electric pot adjusts from 200º F to 375º F, allowing cooks to sauté, sear, braise, boil, or simmer, and the tempered glass lid helps retain moisture during cooking.
- But come on, how lazy can you be?

This we all will love,
The Fingerprint Espresso Machine Slave!
This is the espresso machine that scans your fingertip to identify and make your preferred coffee drink. Simply place your finger on the biometric scanner to program the kind of drink, amount of coffee, and strength-the machine will make the specified drink every time you scan your finger. Made in Italy, the fully automatic machine generates 15 bar of pressure and pre-infuses the coffee grinds with water to extract rich, complex coffee with a thick crema.
- Now this is one machine every home and office should invest in!

Brownies in 10 Minutes!
Do you love making yourself some brownies? Do only like the Do It Yourself Kind but your are strapped on time? Then this brownie maker (who would ever guessed this exists) is for you. Enjoy your perfect desert with this 6 bar brownie maker from Smart Planet. Speedy design allows for cooking from start to finish in under 10 minutes. The energy efficient design uses 25-percent less electricity then conventional ovens. I can already smell them!

How about...
 The Tea-Making Alarm Clock?
This contemporary Teasmade by Swan is an alarm clock and tea maker all in one. Wake up in time, and happy in the morning, with a cup of tea ready to go on your bedside table. A handy gadget that all tea lovers, and those who have difficulty getting out of bed in the morning, will appreciate! A nice cup of tea after all solves everything!

Last but not least, Go Green with...
The Eco Can!
Wave goodbye to boring old tartan thermos flasks, this is the 21st century. That’s why style conscious planet huggers (course they exist) are using the Eco Can to keep drinks hot or cold on the move. It looks like a regular tin can but this durable drinks container is made from biodegradable PLA (a kind of corn starch) which is infinitely kinder to Mother Nature than petroleum-based counterparts. That means you can drink on the go whilst doing your bit for the environment!

Noah and the Ark

Most of you probably would've heard the story of Noah's Ark and the Big Flood that almost destroyed mankind.

For those in the dark, here's the gist: the higher being was once unhappy about the wickedness of men and decided, thus, to destroy all life. Noah was a righteous man who received instructions to build an ark, and to bring with him two of every sort of animal. And then came The Flood.

Now, people, picture Noah's Ark in your mind. I've always come to imagine it looking something like this  :)

Christmas Jars

It's the time of the year when shopping malls are packed with people shopping for Christmas presents. There is a buzz of excitement in the air, and Christmas songs play from the speakers. Twinkling lights and heavily-decorated Christmas trees, foam reindeers and Santa figurines complete the magical Christmas experience (alas, though - there is STILL NO SNOW)  *grumpy*

Not a lot of people would understand that Christmas means more than just getting pressies - it is also a time for family, for giving, and for setting aside differences to make a change. Found below is a story I find so heartwarming I went "awwwww...". Thought it would be interesting to share!

***
"I remember as a young boy I was living in a poor suburban neighbourhood as a foster child. Lost in the system of child services and forced to spend lots of time alone. I would often wander the different neighborhoods on my own and offer to help rake a yard, mow a lawn, or wash some walls in exchange for some pocket money just to buy some school clothes or candy.
I will never forget this one time I knocked on the door of this elderly woman and asked if she needed her leaves raked in the yard. She asked why I was not in school and I showed her my torn pants and the soles of my shoes, which were worn and no longer keeping my feet warm and protected. She allowed me to work in the yard for pretty much that entire day, feeding me lunch and not saying much of anything, and when I was finished I knocked on her door and  she looked at me.  'I suppose you want to be paid now,'she said.
'Yes ma'am I do.'
Picture from here
She asked what my fee was. I had not thought about this, how much I could make, I was just excited about the opportunity, even as a small child.  She said, 'Well come inside,' and then she reached high above the refrigerator and into the cupboard and pulled out this big jar filled with dollar bills of every denomination.  My eyes could not believe it.
She said, 'Now you've done a fine job today and although you missed some school which is very important, that is not something you should be doing again, I want you to buy some pants and new shoes and get back in school.  I also want you to come back and visit me with your report card and I will reward you when I see you have worked hard and have some good marks. Now reach in with both your hands and take out as much as you can.'
I reached in and grabbed so much money I could not believe it for myself. It was enough for me to buy those shoes I needed, two pairs of pants, and also a new shirt. I returned several times to see the woman in the corner house and yes she did just as she promised. She looked at my report card and gave me a handful of dollars and a sandwich every time I showed her I had an "A" or "B", and over the next couple of years she continued to be this positive influence in my life as brief as it was and I never knew her name."

So, there you go; be inspired by the spirit of kindness and sharing and keep the ball rolling!

Lessons Learned: A Twilight-related Post

Fans of Twilight would probably be rejoicing just about now as Twilight: Breaking Down Dawn is due in theaters in three days. For the rest of you, you'd probably shudder and think, "Ugh. Sparkly vampire and emo wolfboy, part four-and-a-half."

Lame storyline and bad acting aside, I'm not saying the Twilight franchise is awful per se - if you'd look hard enough (or lived through any of the first three movies without wanting to jump off a cliff), you'd actually come to the realization that there ARE lessons to be learned.
  • Love at first sight whiff - Before Edward was introduced to Bella he smelled her from across the room. True, as a vampire his sense of smell is finely tuned to react to the scent of blood but YOU'RE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT HERE! As Edward said in the first film, Bella's scent is like his "personal brand of heroin"  *sniff sniff*

Is this what they used to make ol' Eddie glitter?
  • Be accepting of your partner's eccentricity - Quirks like sparkles, odd eye colour, superhuman strength, the ability to read minds as well as occasional blood lust ought to be tolerated, if not accepted, to ensure a lasting relationship.
  • No personal time/space - Edward and Bella are so into each other that the thought of leaving each other for a few days rivals wrenching out a kidney. Really, your partner only needs some alone time to shower and change clothes, and even then, you should be waiting for him/her at the other side of the door. When truly, madly, deeply in love, consider yourself attached to the hip.

I hallucinate about my ex-love when my heart is broken.
  • Breaking up is hard to do - In the event that you and your partner should break up, withdrawing from life as you lived it, depression and hallucinations about your other half are expected side effects. This is what they call true love being lovesick, boys and girls.
  • Do NOT rob the cradle - Even if the guy/girl you're in love with is a sixteen-year old hottie, it's WRONG to rob the cradle. Go for someone your age, please. An imbalanced relationship is always doomed, no matter what they tell you in the Twilight franchise.

Before Bidding Farewell to 2011...

In a blink of an eye it's November, and very soon the joy of Christmas spreads across the world! It felt like it was only yesterday when we celebrated the New Year, and we will soon bid farewell to yet another year and welcome 2012.

Doomsday? Just kidding!

Do you have memories and experiences to cherish and be thankful for this year? Or are you just so glad that it's coming to an end? Whether it's the former or the latter, there's still a month and a half to go, so let's make every bit of this year count! :)

Here are a few suggestions of things to do before the year ends:

Cook a dish to share!

Run a marathon! Not only is it fun with friends but you do burn off some calories!

Fart in an elevator and then look at the person standing next to you.

Okay, okay, let's get just a whee bit serious for now... :)

Don't make an obligatory new year resolution list unless you're serious about it.

Tell your loved ones how thankful you are for what they've done for you throughout the year, and mean it.

FORGIVE your parents, your neighbours, your friends, or anyone who've done wrong to you, from the heart.

Give to a charity without expecting anything in return.

Tip the guys who collect your trash every morning / Greet or smile at the cleaners who clean the place i.e. your home, office, shopping mall, etc. - You've got nothing to lose but gain!

Save at least one stray dog/cat/rabbit/any animal. (Just don't get yourself killed!)

Give your loudest scream on a mountain or at the beach! 'Release' all things bothering you then start fresh in 2012. :)

Complete your 2011 resolution list! (If you have any)

Last but not least,
Reflect on your weaknesses, and realize how it could be strengths. :)

Old-school Candy Crave!

Modern but traditional candy!
Have you always had a sweet tooth? How do you like the candies we have today? (We call it 'modern candy'!) I've been snacking on candies and sugary-goodness lately that it made me reminisce my childhood days. With all the 'cool' candies available almost everywhere in the market today, let's not forget the ones that gave us sugar-coated memories of our childhood.

Do you remember these?

Sugus Chewy Candy!
Sugar-coated goodness! I've always liked the pink ones! :)
Local favourites from Kedai Runcits back then! (Now at 'mamaks')
The White Rabbit sweet!
And even the famous Malaysian Coconut Candy! - One of my personal favourites!
What's your favourite childhood candy?

What's in a Number?

Put your hands up if you're one of those people out there who took a look at their Facebook pages and went, "WHAT IS WITH THESE PEOPLE AND 11.11.11?" *snarls*

What's the big fuss, right? Argh. The big hoohah aside, let's be glad the day's gone (and wouldn't come around for another 100 years or so). People get engaged/married. Some believe if you'd made a wish at 11.11am/pm on 11.11.11 your wish would come true (although personally I thought it was baloney).

That aside, there are 3 predicted scenarios/outcomes of 11.11.11:

Picture taken from here
  • Something bad happens - there is simply no scientific fact to back up this particular belief nor is it logical at all. The belief that something bad would happen on 11.11.11 is basically based on pessimism or better still, paranoia. However, it would also be wrong to say that the belief is erroneous - some cultures do believe so, and what could we do but do respect their cultures, right?
  • Something good happens - There is absolutely no scientific basis for this belief either, unfortunately. This belief relies solely on innate optimism, faith or spirituality, and the belief is not necessarily a bad thing either.
  • Nothing happens - This is (in this writer's opinion) the most likely of all three scenarios. Just because an unusual date number sequence occurs (and so what if it occurs every 100 years!) does not mean that something extraordinary would happen. Some people would take the opportunity to get engaged or married. Some would watch the clock and await 11.11a.m/p.m with bated breath just so they could make a wish and wait for it to come true, as per widespread belief. Some would just moan, cover her eyes and wait for the craze to die down.
So yah. What's YOUR scenario?

For The Love of Coffee

Mmm, coffee. The many wonders of coffee; some love it, some don't. No doubt about coffee causing stained teeth, bad breath and aftertaste, increased risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, possible sleep deprivation, and so forth. Stop me before I scare coffee-lovers away.

But on a good side, coffee is not all hazardous to the human body. Coffee is loaded with antioxidants that help prevent oxidation, a process that causes damage to cells and contributes to aging. Regular coffee consumption reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease, while it is also known to improve mental performance. Caffeine in coffee is a well known stimulant as coffee promotes alertness, attention, and wakefulness.

Facts aside for a minute, making your own cuppa is just as therapeutic and satisfying as sipping a cuppa that tastes good.

Learn the art of coffee and try it at the comfort of your own home! (see video below)
Too cute to drink!

A video worth watching!

Here are some interesting coffee facts and trivias:
  • Take some coffee beans with you in your bag when you shop for perfumes. Have a sniff in between smelling each perfume scent to refresh your nose.
  • Sprinkle spent coffee grounds around the base of your garden plants, it will stop snails and slugs from munching them!
  • A coffee tree has about a lifespan of 50 to 70 years!
  • The aromas of coffee develop at the 10th minute of coffee-roasting.
  • Coffee is the 2nd most widely used product in the world, after oil.
  • The world's 2nd most popular drink, after water.
  • In the United States, September 29th is celebrated as "National Coffee Day"!

(In Malaysia, Coffee Day is celebrated every other hour of the day?) TEEHEE =D

World of Wonder

For those of you who grew up watching Star Trek and Star Wars surely you've lain in bed at night or simply gazed up into a sky full of stars wondering about the mysteries of the universe. But have you ever come to the realization that these mysteries are in fact all around you?

No, the wonders of the universe aren't just about what you cannot see, but about things all around you as well. Keep reading; from the list below, how often can you tell yourself hey, I KNEW that!?

Picture taken from here

  • You know the saying 'blood is thicker than water'? Well, whaddaya know, it's actually scientifically proven that blood is indeed 6 times thicker than water!
  • Between 12% - 15% of the world's population is left-handed.
  • Back in the 1600s, thermometers were filled with brandy rather than mercury.
Picture taken from here
  • A female ferret can die if she goes into heat and cannot find a mate. If that's the case, pet ferrets, especially the female ones, would have a hard time, no?
  • A newborn baby breathes five times faster than an adult male.
Picture taken from here
  • Free Willy! Talk about natural-born killers. Did you know that orcas (killer whales) kill sharks by torpedoing up into the shark's stomach from below, causing the shark to explode.
  • You know how you've watched sci-fi movies about mutant apes and other creatures that invade our planet? Newsflash: leeches could be next to make humans their slaves. Why? Did you know that leeches have 32 brains?
  • A person who smokes a packet of cigarettes per day will, on average, lose two teeth every ten years. You hear that, fellow MYC! co-workers? To avoid teeth from falling out, quit smoking!
Picture taken from here
  • In some parts of England, rum is used to wash a baby's head for good luck. Hence Jack Sparrow's shortage of rum.
  • By age 60, most people would've lost half of their taste buds.
  • An estimated 690 million people live in Africa.

Little Ways Go A Long Way

Little ways go a long way, little things do count.
Often we hear people 'going green' that sometimes we let it pass in ignorance or assumption that our planet will always remain in sunshine with sparrows greeting the morning skies. There is always a reason behind an action.

Going green starts in your every day lifestyle.
Sometimes, you do not have to do 'big' things to make a difference. Little ways go a long way.

Start your mornings by turning off the water tap when you're brushing your teeth.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!
No, we do not mean girlfriends/boyfriends. Reuse and recycle your college textbooks for instance! What's important is the knowledge from its contents, not how 'white' it looks like from the outside. In fact, hand-me-down textbooks are better because you get additional knowledge from side notes written by the previous owner of the book!

Party people, leave the disposable utensils, cups and plates at the supermarket shelves! As tough as it is to go against convenience, try using the plates, cups, and utensils in your cabinets. A little dish-washing wouldn't kill. :)

Use reusable shopping bags and lunchboxes! Surely the first thing that popped into your mind is the 'Go Green Grocery Bag' from your local supermarkets. But no, we meant those stylish fun-looking ones that you can purchase at a very affordable price! In fact, tote bags are in trend right now!
Opt for tupperwares instead of polystyrene boxes as your lunch box too!

Carpool! Drivers, if you're having a grouchy day and feel reluctant to fetch a friend, make some cash? Charge your friend, with a reasonable price, of course! Maybe the value of a drink at your local mamak stall? Disclaimer: True friendship worth more than dollar bills! :)

Save water! Use 'low flush' toilets! That applies only when your 'output' does NOT fill the entire bowl, of course! :)

Last but definitely not least, always THINK 'GREEN'. Have an active conscious mind on doing your little part to help save OUR planet for ourselves, and people in the future. :)

People-profiling

And then there was Em
who had the misfortune
of residing
directly beneath
the icy winds
that freeze faces
and cause frostbite -
often you'd hear
K-pop blasting from
her speakers.

Her weakness:
Korean pretty boys.
(She also moves like Jagger)

A Girl Named Nicole

Once upon a time
there lived a girl
named Nicole.
She lived on
the other side of the wall
from the land so cold
it had the ability
to freeze faces
and cause
your limbs to fall off
from frostbite.
She adored the art
of painting nails
and enjoyed listening to music
that would give her
the blues.
What she had: a great
sense of humor

and terrible luck
when it came to boys men.
